Why it happens

Skunks den in the void under a porch, deck or shed and dig cone-shaped holes across the lawn hunting grubs. They are poor climbers, so almost every skunk problem sits at or below ground level and comes down to one unsecured gap.

The part people underestimate

Spraying is a defensive reflex. The odour penetrates crawlspaces, HVAC intakes and soft furnishings, and household remedies mostly move it around rather than remove it.
