Late winter into spring

Raccoons and squirrels begin hunting for den sites for their litters from around February, which is why attic complaints climb well before the weather turns. Ants become active as the soil warms. Termite swarms follow the first warm, humid, still days, and a scatter of discarded wings on a sill is frequently the only notice you get.

Late spring into early summer

Wasp and hornet queens found new nests, and at this stage they are small and straightforward to deal with. Mosquito numbers build wherever water has been standing. Bat maternity season starts, so exclusion has to wait until pups can fly. Fleas become active as pets spend more time outdoors.

High summer

Mosquitoes peak. Yellow jacket colonies expand quickly. Roach activity rises with the heat, particularly in multi-unit housing. Dead animal calls spike too, because anything that dies inside a wall in July announces itself within a day.

Late summer into autumn

Yellow jackets turn markedly more defensive as their food supply collapses, and this is when most stings occur. Spiders become more visible indoors. Rodents start scouting winter shelter well ahead of the first frost, which makes early autumn the single best window for exclusion work.

Winter

Rodent activity moves indoors properly. Raccoons and squirrels that got into an attic in autumn are now settled. Bed bug reports climb after holiday travel. Termites carry on regardless, they simply become harder to notice, which is why annual inspection is worth booking whatever the month.

Working ahead of it
